#18 My Journey to Becoming an MYP Coordinator

In 2010, with six years of experience as an MYP Science teacher, I had been actively working towards my goal of becoming an MYP Coordinator and an IBEN member. Here's how I did it:

Deepening My IB Knowledge:

  • Professional Development: I attended workshops and PD sessions focused on IB pedagogy, assessment, and leadership. I also enrolled in courses and certifications offered by the IB.
  • Networking: I connected with other IB educators through online forums and communities.

Developing Leadership Skills:

  • Taking on Leadership Roles: I applied for SLC Coordinator, ATL Coordinator, curriculum committees, and year leader. I also mentored new teachers.
  • Enhancing Organizational Skills: I worked on improving my organization skills and time management skills, as well as my communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Cultivating a Growth Mindset: I embraced challenges as opportunities for learning and have sought feedback from colleagues to improve my practice.

Gaining Experience in Curriculum Development and Assessment:

  • Participating in Curriculum Review: I contributed to the development and revision of unit plans and learning outcomes. I also stayed updated on the latest IB curriculum developments and best practices.
  • Mastering IB Assessment: I deepened my understanding of formative and summative assessment and developed expertise in creating high-quality assessment tasks and rubrics.

Building strong relationships with stakeholders:

  • Communicating effectively: I worked on developing strong communication skills to build trust and understanding with parents and students. I organized student-led conferences.
  • Collaborating with colleagues: I fostered a positive and collaborative work environment and have participated in team-teaching and co-planning.

My Professional Goals:

  • Short-Term Goals: Complete an IB-recognized professional development course for MYP Coordinator role, take on a leadership role within my school, and develop expertise in a specific area of the MYP.
  • Mid-Term Goals: Become a visiting team member, mentor new IB teachers, and take on a year leader role for a specific grade level.
  • Long-Term Goals: Become an IB MYP Coordinator, join the IBEN, and pursue a leadership position at an IB World School.

I believe that by continuously learning and growing, I achieved my goals and have made a significant contribution to the IB MYP community.
