#32 MYP Service as Action: Making a Difference

The MYP Service as Action (SAA) program is a key part of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP). It encourages students to go beyond the classroom and engage in meaningful service activities that benefit the community. SAA helps students become active, compassionate, and globally minded citizens.

More Than Just "Service"

SAA is more than just doing something for others. It's about working with communities to understand and address their needs. This approach ensures that service activities are relevant and make a real difference.

Types of Service Activities:

• Direct Service: This involves providing direct assistance, such as tutoring or serving meals.

• Indirect Service: Students can support organizations or initiatives indirectly, like fundraising or raising awareness.

• Advocacy: Speaking out about important issues and promoting positive change is another form of SAA.

• Research: Investigating and analyzing issues helps students better understand their causes and potential solutions.


The SA Process:

SA is a cyclical process that includes:

  1. Investigation: Students research and understand community needs and issues.

  2. Preparation/Planning: A plan of action is developed, outlining roles, responsibilities, and resources.

  3. Action: Students put their plan into action and engage in the chosen service activity.

  4. Demonstration/Sharing: The experience and impact of the service are shared with others.

  5. Reflection: Students critically analyze their experience, identifying learning, growth, and areas for improvement.

Reflection is a vital part of SAA, occurring before, during, and after the experience. It helps students understand what they've learned, the effectiveness of their actions, and the impact they've made.

Key Learning Outcomes of SAA:

Through SAA, students:

• Develop self-awareness and identify their strengths and areas for growth.

• Acquire new skills by taking on challenges.

• Learn to plan, evaluate, and persevere in their actions.

• Develop collaboration skills by working effectively with others.
